This literature review provides a rationale for engaging service users in prison officer training; summarises key literature on what makes a high performing prison officer; and explores examples of service user involvement with staff training from the literature.

This review is published as an annex to our report Potential Unlocked: building a sustainable prison workforce which calls for fundamental reform of the prison officer role in England and Wales.
