Deep Custody: segregation units and close supervision centres in England and Wales

Segregation units and close supervision centres (CSCs) are complex places, where some of the prison’s most challenging individuals are confined alongside some of its most vulnerable people, within a small, enclosed space.

This study set out to shine a light on the deepest part of the prison, and examine the use and functions of segregation units and CSCs across England and Wales . This comprehensive report is based on the views and experiences of prisoners housed in these units and staff working there.
