Safe homes for women leaving prison
This briefing published in collaboration with London Prisons Mission, the Church of St Martin in the Fields and HMP & YOI Bronzefield exposes a failing system that leaves thousands of women released from prisons with just £46, a plastic bag, no where to live and the threat of a return to custody if they miss their probation appointment.
An accompanying Women’s Prison Release Practice Briefing has also been produced and formally endorsed by the Mayor of London Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). They have also agreed, as part of their London Blueprint for Women in the Criminal Justice System, to oversee and monitor its use in securing appropriate housing for women post-release. This is a a significant step forward in ensuring the Briefing helps to achieve the focussed joined-up working necessary for improved housing outcomes.
