PRT comment: Justice Committee report on public opinion and understanding of sentencing

Responding to the findings of the House of Commons Justice Committee report on public opinion and understanding of sentencing published today, Mark Day, deputy director of the Prison Reform Trust said:

“Decades of politicians telling the public that prison sentences are not tough enough — despite all the evidence showing sentences were getting longer and more severe — have contributed to the dysfunctional and reactive debate on sentencing the committee highlights in its report. We support the committee’s call for a more consistent and principled approach by the government, and a structured way of engaging with the public on sentencing policy. A national debate on sentencing and the beleaguered state of our penal system is long overdue.”
