PRT comment: IMBs’ report on impact of IPP sentences

Commenting on the IMBs’ report ‘The impact of IPP sentences on prisoners’ wellbeing’, Mark Day, head of policy and communications at the Prison Reform Trust, said:

“This troubling report highlights the need for the government to urgently revisit its rejection of the Justice Committee’s principal recommendation on resentencing. A revised action plan, while welcome as far as it goes, is simply not enough. Ministers should also prioritise ensuring people on IPPs have access to good mental health support, particularly at a time when their sense of hopelessness and despair is likely to be especially acute. People serving this discredited sentence need to be given the help they need and a reason to hope.”
