PRT comment: HMP Woodhill

Commenting on the findings of conditions at HMP Woodhill by HM Inspectorate of Prisons today (28 November) Pia Sinha, chief executive of the Prison Reform Trust, said:

“Some of the problems at Woodhill are longstanding and appear entrenched. But it is clear that progress will not be made if the prison is not enabled to get to grips with the severe and chronic shortage of staff. Labour market conditions and cost of living pressures in the south east are undoubtedly a factor in why the prison has not been able to keep hold of the staff it needs to run even a basic regime. These are problems which require the government to step in to resolve. The prison cannot fix them on its own.”
