Government proposals to replace Human Rights Act sends “dangerous message” on treatment of prisoners

PRT has published its response to the Ministry of Justice consultation to abolish the Human Rights Act and replace it with a Bill of Rights. The response expresses concern that the consultation sends a “dangerous message” about the value placed on the human rights of people in prison. It says many of the proposals will severely limit the ability of people in prison to seek redress when their human rights have been violated. It questions the need for a review of the Human Rights Act, which has played a significant role in giving individuals, including those held in prison, the power to enforce their rights in practice.
