PRT comment: HMP Send

Commenting on the findings of conditions at HMP Send by HM Inspectorate of Prisons today (1 July) Emily Evison, women’s programme lead at the Prison Reform Trust, said:

“This inspection report rightly highlights the impressive work that is being done in HMP Send. The prison has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety, respect and rehabilitation. The systems put in place to support family contact are particularly welcome.

“This positive inspection is all the more impressive given the wider context of a chronically overcrowded prison system in England and Wales. Many prisons are operating at or near capacity, with compromised living conditions, increased violence and hampered rehabilitation efforts. HMP Send shows what can be achieved with the right resources, and a strong governor and senior leadership team in place.”
